Dumps or technical landfilling centres produce effluent called leachates by percolation of rain water through the trash.

Leachates is characterized by a strong load in nitrogen and in COD. It also has a specific smell and a brown colour that is due to the presence of humic acids. The applied treatment will depend on authorized rejection standards.
